TEN THINGS I WISH I COULD TELL MY 17 YEAR OLD SELF

I am now 25 (& a half) and the other day the wonderfully hilarious and at times painful app, Timehop, reminded me of yet another cringe-worthy thing I had done exactly 8 years ago to the day. So, I was inspired to write a little something on things I wish I had been able to tell myself when I was 17.

1.     NEON TUTUS WILL NOT MAKE YOU LOOK COOL
On a girls trip to Malia, you may all be inspired to think rocking neon tutu’s will be a great idea. Yours will be pink and you will also wear orange braces over a white polo top to ‘complete’ the look. This is not big or clever. Each of your girl gang will then own around 200 pictures from said night and they will haunt you forever. Also, don’t let your friend down a whole bottle of vodka – just a warning.

2.     INFACT, GET OVER THE TUTU OBSESSION FAST
On that note, when you go to uni, you don’t need to wear a tutu with EVERY fancy dress outfit. Seriously, why do you do this? Robber and cops – sure, black tutu it is! Stop it, you will regret it. There is no rule book of 2009 that says all girls must wear tutus with fancy dress outfits, okay?!

3.     DON’T CUT IN HUGE FRINGE
Everyone will be getting a very large, sweeping side fringe cut in – don’t do it because you will forever have short layers at the front of your hair no matter how long you grow it out for. Also, it doesn’t suit you and you look like a fool.

4.     FACEBOOK IS NOT THE PLACE TO HAVE ARGUMENTS
Dammit girl pull yourself together! Facebook is not the place to have in-direct (or direct in some cases) arguments with your current boyfriend or friends. Keep that stuff private and work things out properly. What is a status or ‘sarcastic’ like going to solve? Nothing! And it is really cringy for your older self to read so please stop.

5.     WEARING 3 LAYERS OF FAKE TAN IS NOT NECESSARY
You have fair skin so a little fake tan is okay. What is not okay is this – 1 layer of St.Moritz before bed and then 2 layers of Rimmel instant tan before heading out. You look like a carrot.

6.     YOU WILL FALL OVER IN CLUBS, ALOT
By the time you reach 21 you will realise your health is very important to you but for now, you drink too much. At 17, you will love sneaking into nightclubs to get your ‘Don’t Stay In’ picture and at 18, 19, 20 you will go out nearly every weekend. Don’t get me wrong, there are some hilarious memories but you and your friends will fall over, a lot. Remember, bruised knees are not pretty in the summer.

7.     BOYS ARE NOT IMPORTANT
You may think you are in love (FYI, you are not) but your friends are more important. Don’t ditch them and don’t choose boys over them, EVER. You will find someone you really love later in life. When someone doesn’t treat you right, you should leave. You won’t, because you are 17 and think you know best but you should, because you will be happier once you do.

8.     DON’T WEAR HEELS IN THE SNOW
You may be desperate to go out but your feet will get mild frost bite (no joke, this actually happens)! You will do it a few times and regret it every single time. In-fact, just don’t go out in the snow because you will be waiting hours for a cab in the freezing cold after the clubs have closed.

9.     YOU WILL LEARN WHICH FRIENDS ARE FOREVER
It will suck but some of your ‘friends’ will talk about you behind your back and do really shady things. The best part is though you will find out who your friends for life are and at 25 you will be closer with them than ever. The girl you met on your first day of high school that wore her hair like Princess Leia? Yhup, she will still be your friend. There will be a few girls you aren’t as close to right now but who end up always being there for you. It will take a lot but at 25, you will be surrounded with the girls who make you happy and you can always count on for a few too many glasses of wine & support (hi ladies, you know who you are xxx)

Also, on that note, your mum will be your best friend. Stop shouting at her and stop arguing with your sister over silly things. Family is very important to you.

10.  TRY AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF MORE

You will achieve everything you wanted to for a 25 year old. You will work in fashion but fall out of love with it and then find new, different passions. You will buy your first home with someone you love and challenges you. Don’t get me wrong, you will still criticise yourself and your body but you will get better at being more comfortable being you. You will accept there will ALWAYS be people that don’t like you or judge you and that’s life.  Stop worrying about everyone else and focus on what you want to do because you can do it. At 17, you will pre-occupied with having fun and that is fine but remember when you get that degree, that first job and you open the door to your own house for the first time, that YOU did that. Be proud of yourself girl, you’re doing alright.
